NYC Coalition To End Lead Poisoning
Read Our Plan to End Lead PoisoningThe New York City Coalition to End Lead Poisoning (NYCCELP) is a coalition of advocates, doctors, and lawyers who first came together to create and pass Local Law 1 of 2004. Now, NYCCELP convenes the Lead Roundtable of advocates focused on closing loopholes in Local Law 1 and ensuring lead laws are adequately implemented and enforced.
WHY WE ADVOCATE
Lead is a poisonous heavy metal that can affect almost every organ and system in the human body, often with irreversible effects. People of all ages face health risks from lead exposure, but fetuses and young children are most susceptible to the adverse effects of lead.
Our Plan to End Lead Poisoning in NYC
Despite the progress made through recent legislation, New York will still fail to achieve its goal of eliminating lead poisoning in children without taking additional steps to strengthen the City’s policies and programs – and the funding needed to effectively implement and enforce them. The NYCCELP has developed the following policy agenda of steps city leaders must take in 2024/2025 to eliminate childhood lead poisoning.
-
Step 1
Protect New Yorkers – especially families and workers – from exposure to lead during the lead paint remediation and other construction work.
-
Step 2
Invest in programs and interventions that protect children from lead poisoning through New York City’s budget.
-
Step 3
Pass city legislation to strengthen early identification, prevention, and enforcement.
-
Step 4
Eliminate adult exposure to lead poisoning.
-
Step 5
Identify and eliminate lead poisoning from lead service lines.
