Our Plan to End Lead Poisoning

In 2004, New York City enacted LL1, the most ambitious and comprehensive lead poisoning prevention law in the country, with the stated goal of ending childhood lead poisoning by 2010. The number of children testing positive for elevated blood levels has indeed decreased. Yet, particular communities are still impacted disproportionately.

In 2021:

  • 2,557

NYC children under 6 had elevated blood lead levels (EBLL)

  • 81%

of children under 6 newly identified with EBLL were Asian, Black, or Latino/a/x

  • 88%

of the children were also from moderate to high-poverty neighborhoods
